As goalies and avid fans of goaltending, we at Goalie Guru love researching and wearing old school gear and brands. We have always been fascinated by custom brands who continue to produce solid quality gear year after year, and are able to compete with the bigger brands of CCM, True, Bauer, Warrior and Vaughan. Whether they are still operating in 2026 or have closed up shop, the goalies who started these smaller brands have their own visions for a new way of how a goalie pad should be made, and the design work that they produced holds up when compared to the bigger brands at the time, and now.

Battram custom gear was started in 1992 by Scott Battram in Woodstock, Ontario. As an artisan and fellow goalie, it is stated on his website that “You won’t see our products in the NHL, as we cater to the everyday goalie who desires the ultimate in protection and function at a reasonable price.” What a wonderful philosophy.
Scott states that he is involved in the entire creation process, from ordering to designing to building. The gear is currently produced and made in Norwich, Ontario.
Battram specializes in: Pads, Gloves, Blockers, Custom Full Sets, Chest Protectors, and even Neck Guards

We at Goalie Guru recently got our hands on our own full set of Battram’s. Purchased on SidelineSwap from eastern Ontario, these pads were made custom in 2018 for a goaltender, before being sold to us in 2025.
The pads are heavy, but offer perhaps the most protection of any gear on the market. You won’t find yourself getting a stinger in the palm, or a puck to the knee, because of Battram’s attention to detail. However, pucks can find their way to the fingers on your blocker hand despite the bulky padding, meaning you may require a Blok or other similar product to protect your extremities.
The blocker places the puck out of reach of rebounds often, and the glove closes beautifully. We haven’t played around with the strapping on the pads much yet, but there is some customization available.
Battram’s reputation has been somewhat erratic in recent years, with many customers appreciating their attention to detail, but some voicing their discontent with the company’s communication, and quality of product. Though there are complaints about Battram’s longevity of quality, our experience with the 2018 modern model has been good; the material doesn’t appear to have deteriorated at all, though we will update if this changes in the next few years.
