Top Goalies NHL Week 1

With the newest NHL season launching last week, we wanted to highlight the top goalies throughout the first week of games. We love to see goalies dominating, and with a variety of exceptional displays of goaltending through the first week, here are our top picks for Week 1 Allstars, with some honorable mentions included!

Igor Shesterkin – Rangers (.972, 0.75 GAA – 4 Games)

Dominant as ever and ready to lead his team back into the playoffs, Shesterkin had four outstanding games in week one. He started twice against Pittsburgh, and once each against Buffalo and Edmonton. Despite allowing just FIVE goals, he and the Rangers have been shutout twice. Shesterkin has kept his team in 1-0 games until the very end. New York hopes his 37-save shutout against Buffalo signals the return of Shesterkin’s dominant, and unbreakable form.

Juuse Saros – Predators (.947 %; 1.64 GAA – 3 Games)

After a brief test of some Bauer gear in pre-season, Saros took control in his new True PX5 gear and led the Preds to two big wins in week one. After a disappointing 2024/25 season, where Saros posted his first below .900 season in the league, Saros has offered the level of consistency and composure Nashville expects from its franchise cornerstone.

Thatcher Demko – Canucks (.944 %, 1.54 GAA – 2 Games)

After yet another injury set back early in the 2023/24 playoffs, and a shortened campaign last season, Demko enters this season with all eyes on whether he can regain form. Early returns this year suggest optimism might be in the cards. Though his game has changed, he looks more calculated now, less explosive but more efficient, this new measured approach appears to have him one step ahead of most plays.

Scott Wedgewood – Avalanche (.935%, 1.72 GAA – 4 Games)

With Mackenzie Blackwood missing training camp and the preseason with an injury, veteran backup Scott Wedgewood has seized the opportunity in Colorado’s crease. His sparkling week one save percentage led the Avalanche to seven of a possible eight points, Scott’s play steadying the team defensively and helping in transition. Rocking his striking all black True gear, Wedgewood embodies balance; disciplined but ready to throw caution to the wind at the drop of a hat, relying on pure instinct to turn chaos into calm

Honorable Mentions

Daniel Vladar – Flyers (.933%, 2.02 GAA – 2 games)

After a disappointing season in Calgary, Vladar has had a good showing in his first two games as a Flyer. He’s had some help from the refs and video review, but even so he appears to have taken a step.

Jet Greaves – Blue Jackets (.932%, 2.06 GAA – 2 games)

Solidifying the backup role for himself in Columbus, Greaves has played two games that shows he can not only battle in the league, but be a goalie a team can rally around. Greaves makes big save after big save. At only 5 ’11, he has a lot to prove after earning his spot, and with a team that is struggling to score early on, Columbus will need to count on him and Elvis to help in transition.

Alex Lyon – Sabres (.919%, 2.73 GAA – 3 games)

Alex Lyon didn’t have one of the top performances statistically in week one, but the 3 losses he and the Sabres suffered he was none to blame. Buffalo shouldn’t have even been in some of those games. In 26 games with an average Detroit team last season, he will need to emphasize his reading of plays more so than his positioning, the Buffalo Sabres early on have given up so many prime chances that he can’t rely on his defenceman for much at all. A weak showing by Georgiev and Levi in the preseason and an injury to Luukkonen sees Lyon as the designated starter for the foreseeable future.
